A Year Out of Tune
(and Yet Weirdly in Harmony)

2024 will probably go down in history books as the year when politics and pop culture finally admitted they were in a long-term relationship. While European leaders were busy debating energy policies that seemed written by a committee of exhausted interns, and the United States went through another election cycle resembling a high-budget reality show, the music world offered its own kind of geopolitical commentary.

On November, 1 The Cure returned with the long-anticipated „Songs of a Lost World“ – an album title that felt strangely appropriate for a continent arguing about digital borders, refugee quotas, and whether AI should be allowed to compose Eurovision entries. Robert Smith’s melancholic croon floated over Europe like a reminder that things could always be sadder, darker, and more poetically miserable.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, Shellac released their fiercely angular farewell salvo, „To All Trains“. The album landed with the bittersweet weight of history, as fans were still processing the loss of Steve Albini, who passed away earlier in the year. In a period when politicians were shouting over each other during televised debates, Albini’s sonic clarity felt like a protest against noise – both literal and metaphorical. “To All Trains” became an accidental reflection on endings: of careers, of political eras, and of patience.

But Europe wasn’t done. Germany delivered one of the year’s most unexpected cultural jolts with KLEZ:E and their electrifying new album „Erregung“. While Brussels struggled to regulate everything from cryptocurrency to toaster energy consumption, KLEZ:E charted their own course – somewhere between post-punk urgency and the emotional disarray of a continent trying to modernize without losing itself. Erregung (“agitation,” though some diplomats insisted it meant “exactly how the EU Parliament feels every Monday”) became an unofficial soundtrack to European politics: tense, expressive, and unmistakably alive.

By December, analysts were still trying to make sense of the great geopolitical choreography of the year. But music lovers had already reached their conclusion:
If 2024 proved anything, it’s that when politics becomes absurd, music becomes essential.

The videos are, of course, just an appetizer – I apologize in advance for the awful and mostly stupid advertising shown on the portal. Naturally, the songs sound particularly good on vinyl records. And the best place to buy these is at your local vinyl dealer.
