2015 – A Year Holding Its Breath (Quiet Intensity & Unanswered Questions)

As 2015 draws to a close, it feels like a year suspended between movement and hesitation.

Across Europe, the refugee crisis has reshaped public debate, exposing both remarkable solidarity and unsettling hostility. Borders have become symbols again, fences have returned to headlines, and the idea of a shared European responsibility is being tested daily.

In November, the cowardly attacks by religious fanatics in Paris shook the continent deeply. Suddenly, conversations about security, freedom, and fear moved from opinion pages into everyday life. Candlelit vigils filled public squares, while political rhetoric hardened almost overnight.

At the same time, world leaders gathered in Paris for the COP21 climate conference, speaking urgently about the future — as if aware that time itself might be running short.

Nothing feels settled.
But nothing has fully broken either.

Music, as so often, captured this state of quiet tension better than most commentary.

The Weight Beneath the Surface

Chelsea Wolfe released „Abyss“, an album that feels less like a collection of songs and more like a plunge inward.

Listening to it at the end of 2015, Abyss captures a mood that runs beneath the year’s headlines — a sense of unease, pressure, and darkness that refuses to be neatly explained away. While public debate circles around migration, inequality, climate anxiety, and violence, Wolfe’s music sinks deeper, into the emotional undercurrents that these discussions often avoid.

The album doesn’t offer clarity or comfort.
It lingers.
It confronts.
And in doing so, it becomes a companion to a year that feels increasingly heavy, even before anyone can fully say why.

A New Voice Steps Forward

Then came The Slow Show with „White Water“ — for me, the newcomer of the year.

In contrast to the noise of public debate, White Water speaks softly but with conviction. Its slow-burning songs feel grounded, almost timeless, as if insisting that depth still matters in an increasingly accelerated world.

At the end of 2015, this feels reassuring: proof that patience and sincerity still have a place.

Small Doors, Quiet Shifts

Completing the picture is Foreign Tongues with „Fragile, As Said Before“.

While politics focuses on borders, walls, and large gestures, Fragile, As Said Before turns inward. It explores thresholds on a human scale — subtle changes, emotional transitions, private realizations.

It suggests that not all turning points announce themselves loudly. Some arrive quietly, and only later reveal their significance.

Ending the Year with Open Questions

As 2015 ends, there is no clear conclusion.
The world feels uneasy, alert, slightly off balance — but still functional. Many believe solutions will be found, that cooperation will prevail, that the fractures revealed this year can still be repaired.

„My“ music of 2015 reflects this fragile moment. It forms the soundtrack of a year that hasn’t collapsed — but is unmistakably waiting.

Waiting for answers.
Waiting for direction.
Waiting to see which way the door will open.

The videos are, of course, just an appetizer – I apologize in advance for the awful and mostly stupid advertising shown on the portal. Naturally, the songs sound particularly good on vinyl records. And the best place to buy these is at your local vinyl dealer.
